King Siva I
Kingdom of Anuradhapura
47 BC - 45 BC

Siva I was King of Anuradhapura in the 1st century BC, who ruled in the year 47 BC. He succeeded Kuda Tissa as King of Anuradhapura and was succeeded by Vatuka.

Queen Anula was anointed as the queen consort of King Choranaga, the son of King Valagamba. Being of immoral conduct, she poisoned and killed King Choranaga.

Afterwards, King Tissa (known as Kuda Tissa) who ascended the throne was also poisoned and killed in the same manner. She then installed her lover, a gatekeeper named Siva, as king. Later, she had Siva killed and appointed Vatuka as king. After him, she killed Vatuka and installed Darubhatika. Next, she killed him and made the Brahmin priest Niliya the ruler. Finally, she also killed him and ruled the kingdom herself.

According to the Pujavaliya, the individuals whom Queen Anula installed as her husbands and kings after King Kuda Tissa were listed as Balat Situwā, Vatuka, Paravi, Vāsukī, and Balatissa. During this period, the country fell into great disorder, and royal authority was limited only to Anuradhapura.

Later, Prince Kutakanna Tissa, the second son of King Mahasiva Mahatissa, ascended the throne. Thus ended the rule of the first recorded queen in Sri Lankan history. She is recorded as the first queen in the Sinhala royal lineage.
