King Mutasiva
Kingdom of Anuradhapura
367 BC - 307 BC

After the long reign of King Pandukabhaya, his son, Prince Mutasiva, ascended the throne. His mother was named Swarnapali. In the Rajavaliya, this king is referred to as Mutatissa. The chronicles, however, provide only a very brief account of this monarch. It is stated that he created the Mahameghavana Park. During the construction of this garden, an untimely rain occurred, and as a result, it came to be known as “Maha Meghavana” (the Great Rain Grove). King Mutasiva ruled peacefully in Anuradhapura for sixty years. Professor Senarath Paranavithana, using various sources, has explained in detail the era and background of this king, who is said to have also been known as Murundasiva. However, in a basic study of history, such extended analyses are not essential.

King Mutasiva had ten sons and two daughters. The Dipavamsa refers to this group of siblings as the “Dashabhaiya” (the ten brothers). Although he reigned for sixty years, no other significant events are recorded from his time apart from the creation of the Mahameghavana garden. It is possible that this long period did not pass without purpose, yet no historical records provide further details of his reign.
