King Panayamara
Kingdom of Anuradhapura
98 BC - 91 BC

After the five-month reign of King Valagamba, an invasion arose. King Valagamba did not possess sufficient strength to face the invading army led by seven Tamil generals. This situation was likely caused by the instability that followed the assassination of King Khallatanaga by the commander Maharatthaka.

Due to the invasion of the seven Tamil leaders, King Valagamba fled along with his queen Somadevi, his son Prince Mahanaga, Queen Anula (wife of King Khallatanaga), and Prince Mahatissa. Along the way, Somadevi was captured by one of the Tamil commanders. He took her and returned to the other side, while another commander took the sacred Patra Relic. The remaining five Tamil leaders then took control of the kingdom.

Among the five, Pulahatta became king. His general was a Tamil named Bahiya, who killed Pulahatta and seized the throne. Pulahatta’s reign lasted about three years.

After him, Bahiya’s general, a Tamil named Panayamara, killed him and took the throne. Bahiya ruled for two years.

Next, Pilayamara, the general of Panayamara, killed him and seized power. Panayamara ruled for seven years.

After that, Pilayamara was killed by his general Dathiya, who then became king.

Finally, King Valagamba killed Dathiya and regained the throne of Anuradhapura.
