King Kitti was killed and his throne was usurped by a man named Mahalana Kitti. In Sinhala chronicles, he is referred to as Mahalē Raja (the Great King). Although the Mahavamsa states that he possessed great power, it does not mention whose son or relative he was. However, King Mahalana Kitti was one who attempted to free the country from Chola domination.

At one time, when he went to battle against the Cholas and could not achieve victory, he considered it better to die by his own hand than to be killed by them. Thus, he tore his own throat and died. During this event, the Chola army plundered all the royal insignia and treasures prepared by King Vikramabahu and sent them to the Chola monarch.

In an inscription of the Rajadhiraja Chola king, there is mention of a person named Manabharana who was slain by them. No such name appears in Sinhala records. However, it is possible to identify this Manabharana as the same person referred to in our chronicles as Mahalana Kitti.

It is not clearly known from which central seat the kings Kitti and Mahalana Kitti ruled over Rohana. The ancient capital of the Rohana kingdom, Magama, had by then turned into ruins. Therefore, it is presumed that these kings maintained Kataragama as their administrative center.
