King Wimaladharmasuriya II
Kingdom of Kandy
1687 AC - 1707 AC

After the death of King Rajasinghe II, his son Prince Vimaladharmasuriya ascended the throne. He is identified as Vimaladharmasuriya II.

He is generally described as a peaceful ruler who, from childhood, showed a strong inclination toward religion and Buddhist practice. Because of this disposition, he had little interest in continuing military conflicts with the Dutch.

Religious Contributions

One of the most important achievements of his reign was the revival of higher ordination (Upasampadā) in Sri Lanka. By this time, the ordination tradition in the island had declined, and therefore monks were invited from Burma (Myanmar) to re-establish the Upasampadā ceremony in the Kandyan Kingdom.

This event is considered a major milestone in the restoration of the Buddhist monastic order in Sri Lanka.

Royal Family and Foreign Relations

His son, Prince Veera Parakrama Narendra Sinha, later became an important figure in the Kandyan succession.

It is also recorded that during Vimaladharmasuriya II’s reign, a diplomatic mission was sent to Madurai in South India to find a queen for his son, indicating continued cultural and political connections between Kandy and South India.
