King Weera Parakramabahu VIII
Kingdom of Kotte
1484 AC - 1508 AC

After the death of King Pandita Parakramabahu, the son of King Bhuvanekabahu VI, the throne was seized by Prince Ambulugala, the brother of King Bhuvanekabahu VI (Prince Sapumal). This ruler can be identified as Veera Parakramabahu VIII.

Many scholars have expressed the view that the famous Hansa Sandeshaya, traditionally attributed to the reign of King Parakramabahu VI, was in fact composed during the reign of this king.

It is recorded that in the latter part of his reign, the king entrusted various regions of the kingdom to his sons and delegated their administration to them.

It was also during the reign of this king that the Portuguese first arrived in Sri Lanka, marking the beginning of a difficult and transformative period in the island’s history. The arrival of the Portuguese is generally dated to 1505 CE, during the rule of the Kotte Kingdom. Portuguese arrival in Sri Lanka
