King Buvanekabahu IV
Kingdom of Gampola
1341 AC - 1359 AC

After the death of King Vijayabahu V, his eldest son, Prince Bhuvanekabahu, ascended the throne. He is known as King Bhuvanekabahu IV.

After a few years, his brother, Prince Parakramabahu, established his rule centered in Dadigama, while King Bhuvanekabahu chose Gampola as his royal capital. He is regarded as the first king of the Gampola period.

Among the notable architectural achievements of this king are the Gadaladeniya Temple and the Lankatilaka Temple.

Although this king referred to himself as “Tri Sinhala Adhishwara” (Lord of the Three Sinhalas), it appears that he did not actually rule over the entire island. It is evident that there were independent regional administrations in various parts of the country, including the Arya Chakravarti rule in the north.

It is also stated that this king wore a pair of glasses made of crystal, and that the tradition of making such spectacles was passed down by his ancestors. This claim is mentioned by Mr. Kahambe Gunasoma of Pilimatalawa, who is still engaged in this craft.
