King Anikanga
Kingdom of Polonnaruwa
1209 AC - 1209 AC

Prince Anikanga, who killed Dharmashoka the child prince and Ayasmanta Senpathiya who had held power, ascended the throne in Polonnaruwa. Information about him is obscure. However, the title “Mahadhipadha” applied to him in the Mahavamsa indicates that he was not a suddenly risen greedy aspirant to the throne. This term suggests that he had a royal inheritance, because Mahadhipadha is a title applied to the next prince in line with royal rights. In Sinhala records and inscriptions, this title is referred to as “Mahaya.”

There is no clear record indicating under which king Anikanga held the Mahadhipadha title. The chronicle only mentions that he came from Soli country. It is possible to infer that during the reign of the previous king, Prince Anikanga, holding the Mahadhipadha title, went to Soli country to avoid the power of hostile Senaviyas, and during the final period of Queen Kalyanawathi, he took advantage of the internal conflict, brought a Tamil army to Lakdiva, removed Queen Kalyanawathi from the throne, placed Dharmashoka the infant prince on the throne, and killed Abhona Senaviya and the king, thereby seizing the kingdom.

The main power opposing him appears to have been Ayasmanta Senaviya. His reign lasted seventeen days.
