King Daththa
Kingdom of Anuradhapura
683 AC - 684 AC

After Sirisanghabodhi, also known as King Aggabodhi, political turmoil arose in the country once again. During the period when the king was in Polonnaruwa, the administration of Anuradhapura was under the control of a Tamil official named Pottakuttha. After the king’s death, he seized state power into his own hands.

The sub-king Dāṭhāśiva was captured and imprisoned, but it does not appear that he intended to claim the throne. He must have understood that he had no legitimate right to it.

Pottakuttha, wishing to install a puppet king whom he could control as he pleased, sought a person born of the Okkaḳa dynasty. This person was either Danapiti or Walpita Vesi Datta. After King Aggabodhi, Datta was crowned. He constructed a monastery and died two years later.
